“Children’s toothpaste doesn’t need fluoride.” Some companies use slogans like these or similar ones to attract customers.
Unfortunately, this statement isn’t true. Without fluoride, teeth aren’t effectively protected against cavities. Supposed alternatives like hydroxyapatite, activated charcoal, or xylitol either provide little to no relief or even damage teeth with long-term use. The nasty thing is that you only notice the lack of protection over time. It’s not as if your teeth will fall out or crumble immediately, and even fluoride-free toothpastes, thanks to mint or menthol, offer a pleasant feeling in your mouth after brushing. However, by the time you notice that your teeth have been seriously damaged, it’s already too late.
In order not to let these harmful claims of the alternative medicine industry stand unchallenged, I started the website fluoridfree-toothpaste.com as a small side project. My goal is to inform website visitors about the advantages and disadvantages of fluoride-free toothpaste as neutrally and objectively as possible, thus preventing the internet from being exclusively occupied by providers who make money selling fluoride-free products.
From a personal perspective, I’m also curious to see how effectively one can position a niche topic like fluoride-free toothpaste in Google search results without a budget and with a relatively manageable amount of time. I’m excited!
